Alexandria boys' hockey: Cardinals fall to Warriors, Crusaders

The Alexandria boys' hockey team ran into a hot team and came away with another close loss for the second straight night in a 1-0 game against Brainerd-Pillager-Pierz on Tuesday.

Alexandria goaltender Ben Allen withstood a barrage of shots all night from the Warriors. Brainerd outshot the Cardinals 52-23, but Allen turned aside 51 of those to give his team a chance the whole night.

That flurry of shots started in the first period as the Warriors put 17 shots on the net. One of those finally found the mark as Reno Fussy scored at 7:57 off an assist from Mason Severson that turned out to be the game winner.

"About halfway through the game, Alex came to life and battled hard but just couldn't find a way to score," Alexandria head coach Scott Woods said. "It is the stage of the season where it becomes easy to get frustrated and question each other, but quality teams stick together and move on to the next game. These tight games build character and prepare teams for big playoff games."

Brainerd moved to 6-2-0 in conference play and 11-4-0 overall after the win. The Cardinals are still well within reach of the CLC at 6-2-1. They have an 8-7-1 overall mark and were set to put that on the line against Sartell-St. Stephen last night, Thursday, before welcoming in section front-runner Little Falls next Tuesday.

SCC 2, Alexandria 1

The Alexandria boys' hockey team stuck with ninth-ranked St. Cloud Cathedral on Monday night before the Crusaders held on for a 2-1 win in a tight game from start to finish.

Cathedral struck first a little less than four minutes into the opening period on a goal from Tommy Hall. Alexandria's Matt Resch answered back on a power play at 14:20 in the period off assists from Kevin Finley and Christian Canavati.

That's how things went into the second period before the Crusaders took advantage of a power play of their own. This time, it was Austin Poganski who scored off an assist from Hall to make it 2-1.

The Cardinals had their chances to tie it in the final period. Alexandria outshot Cathedral 26-24 in the third, but couldn't find the back of the net to pull even. The Crusaders outshot Alexandria 26-24 as they moved to 10-6 overall.

"It was a state-tournament type game," head coach Scott Woods said. "The loss wasn't what we wanted, but the confidence to play with a ranked team goes a long way."
