Cross country: VanKempen first at Frazee race

Abby VanKempen paced the West Central Area girls' cross country team in Frazee last Thursday with an individual first-place finish.

VanKempen crossed the finish line in 16:50, well ahead of second-place finisher Ashley Hasbargen (18:13) of Breckenridge. Other WCA runners were Hannah Frisch (14th, 20:32), Ashton Blair (19th, 21:13), Kylee Fernholz (20th, 21:13) and Katie Poyzer (26th, 23:20).

The West Central Area boys were led by sophomore Devin Nelson. Nelson was third in a time of 19:40. Christian Swenson was ninth in 21:00. Zachary Cunningham finished 19th (23:01), Cody Mehlhaf 24th (24:12) and Austin Hennen 25th (24:22). Tyler Schill (24:37), Andrew Lindor (25:23), Jeremiah Drews (25:26) and Alex Toms (26:55) also raced for the Knights.

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton won the team event for both the boys and girls. The Knights took third in the boys' competition with 65 points and fourth in the girls' competition with 74 points.
