Football: Prairie Valley rolls past Hillcrest

The Prairie Valley football team had two weeks to prepare for a 2-0 Hillcrest Lutheran Academy team, and the Nighthawks made it look easy on their way to a 2-0 record with a 49-7 win over the Comets.

Prairie Valley's only punt came on the team's first possession of the game. The Nighthawks took control from that point on as Luke Mock and Tyler Schlosser scored on rushing touchdowns to make it a 14-0 game after the first quarter.

That was the beginning of a big game for Mock. The senior running back finished with 135 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. He also added a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter that made it a 28-7 game at the break.

Derek Meyer added 59 yards on the ground as five Prairie Valley backs finished with at least 20 yards.

Hunter Arnold also had a big night for the Nighthawks. The senior connected with Grant Yohnke on a 38-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Arnold also ran the ball twice for seven yards and a touchdown, while catching two balls for 41 yards.

The defense was equally as dominant against a pass-happy Hillcrest team. The Comets completed just 9-of-21 passes for 75 yards. Mark Hewitt recovered a fumble and Mock and Schlosser each added interceptions. Schlosser led the way with 11 tackles, while Meyer and junior Bryce Looker finished with 10 and seven tackles, respectively. Prairie Valley also got a blocked kick in the game by Meyer, and Alexander Ghahremany was a perfect 7-for-7 on extra points.

"Last Friday was a total team effort," Sieling said. "There are plenty of areas to work on and get better, but overall the Nighthawks had a very good night on both sides of the ball."

Prairie Valley has outscored opponents 97-7 through their first two games of the season. The Nighthawks will try to build on that as they welcome in a 2-1 Underwood team to Eagle Bend for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday.
