Girls' golf: West Central Area wins 5A-North title

The West Central Area girls will move on to the Section 5A golf tournament after capturing the title in the 5A-North event Wednesday at the Minnewaska Golf Club in Glenwood.

"We had a fun day," said Knight head coach Kari Kreft. "It can't get any better than both the girls' and boys' teams taking first together. Our goal was to go home with a first place trophy and medals around our necks, and we did it."

West Central Area's Tiffany Boysen carded a round of 103 to earn third place, while teammate Marissa Hayward finished fourth with a 104.

"We are very excited about Tiffany's third place finish and Marissa's fourth place finish," Kreft added. "Tiffany golfed strong and steady the whole day. Marissa had some amazing shots that were fun to watch.

"McKenzie Hunter finished on No. 9 with a birdie, and came very close to a hole-in-one. What a finish!

"I knew we were in pretty good shape after the first nine holes, but the girls didn't realize it yet. Katie and Morgan had a few big holes and it was really important to us as a team that they recover and finish strong. They did that.

"It began to pour on our second nine, conditions we were not used to this year," Kreft said. "The girls handled this well, both in attitude and golfing, and were excited to discover they had scored well enough to finish in first place.

The team competes in the Section 5A meet at Benson today, Wednesday.
