Section 5A-West softball: Osakis shuts down BBE in five innings

The Osakis softball team earned the second seed in the 5A West tournament and proceeded to cruise to a 12-2 win over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the opening round last Friday.

The Jaguars jumped out to a 2-0 lead off of Sabrina Zimmel in the top of the first on the back of three hits. Zimmel adjusted after that, allowing just one hit the rest of the way and striking out six.

"She pitched a very good ballgame," head coach John Stigman said.

It didn't take long for her offense to get those two runs back for her. Osakis scored three in the bottom of the first and broke things open in the third.

The Silverstreaks put two runners on in front of Zimmel in that frame. The senior took advantage of an opportunity to blow the game open by delivering a three-run home run.

"After that, all of our bats came alive," Stigman said. "[We got] big hits from Rachelle [Rajdl], Alida [Hovey], Mackenzie [Staloch] and Alex [Anderson]. We were able to put the game out of reach in the fourth with a clutch two-run single by Lauren [Silbernick], plating Tonya [Hetland] and Janna [Juntunen]."

Silbernick joined Zimmel with three RBIs on the night. Anderson added a triple and two RBIs, while Hovey and Dani Chisholm both went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

"We are very happy with how we played today and very happy that we are moving on to play another day," Stigman said.

Osakis was scheduled to take on third-seeded Eden Valley-Watkins in the subsection semifinals last night, Tuesday. A win would advance the Silverstreaks to the West finals on Thursday against the winner of fifth-seeded Kimball Area and top-seeded Browerville. Both games will be played at Minnewaska at 5 p.m.
