Blizzard hockey: Sturos earns NAHL honor

Reid Sturos NAHL Player of the Month

Alexandria Blizzard forward Reid Sturos was honored for his play in January by being named the North American Hockey League's (NAHL) Player of the Month.

Sturos became the second Blizzard player to earn a player of the month award after Jacob Meyers was named Goaltender of the Month in November.

Sturos was instrumental in Alexandria going 8-1 in January. The Brighton, Michigan native had 14 points in those nine games, scoring seven goals and adding seven assists.

"He's very deserving," head coach Doc DelCastillo said. "He played very well. He was kind of finding his stride before he got hurt, but he's been playing at a very high level."

The Blizzard hope Sturos won't be out long with what DelCastillo called a lower body injury that he suffered in Austin this past Saturday. He was expected to miss Wednesday's game against Bismarck.

Sturos will be needed back in the lineup for Alexandria to continue its strong push down the stretch. He was a plus-seven during the month of January and had two four-point games in wins over Minot and Bismarck. He added another three-point game against the Minotauros on January 27.

Sturos was tied with Nick D'Avolio for first on the team in points with 35 after last weekend. His 22 assists are one ahead of Tucker Coborn for the team lead and his 13 goals are just two behind D'Avolio for the team lead.

"He's contributing on a nightly basis, which is a big thing," DelCastillo said. "He had a couple big nights there where he was scoring two, three points a game. He's hitting his stride. He's a very good player for us, and we expect him to be a very good player for us."
