The Cardinal girls' hockey team had chance after chance to break things open but had to settle for a 2-2 tie against section foe Pequot Lakes on Tuesday night.

Alexandria dominated the pace of play for most of the night but couldn't get much past the Patriots' Madison Galligan. The freshman keeper played like a seasoned veteran, turning aside 36 Alexandria shots. Many of those were good looks at the net that the Cardinals wish they could have had back after Pequot Lakes tied the game in the third to force overtime.

Pequot Lakes got contributions from a group of freshmen that are getting their feet wet at the varsity level. Megan Synder scored the tying goal at the 11-minute mark in the third. Fellow freshman Mariah Reed scored the front end of her team's two goals 12:05 into the first to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead despite being outshot 9-3 at that point.

It didn't take long for Alexandria to answer. Shanee Herd capped off an end-to-end rush by sneaking one past Galligan to tie things up.

The Cardinals continued to send shots at the net all night. They outshot the Patriots 28-6 after two periods and 38-16 for the game. They were able to capitalize on a power play late in the second to take a 2-1 lead when Melissa Drown collected a rebound and put it in the open net for a 2-1 lead.

It was a lead that seemed safe given the way Alexandria was controlling the pace of play. The Patriots reversed those fortunes in the third to secure a tie in what could be a preview of a section tournament game in a couple weeks.

The Cardinals had two games left on the regular-season schedule before playoffs start on February 11. Alexandria was scheduled to welcome in St. Cloud last night, Thursday, before Moorhead comes to town to wrap up the season next Thursday night.
