Boys' basketball: Ashby shuts down Brandon-Evansville

Eric Morken, Echo Press Jon Quernemoen scored six points and added four rebounds and three assists as the Ashby Arrows handed Brandon-Evansville a 67-34 loss in Little Eight Conference boys' basketball action last week

Ashby boys' basketball coach Jeremy Knick got the response he was hoping for in his team's first game back after getting challenged in its closest game of the season against Hancock last Tuesday night.

The Arrows held off the Owls by one point that night. Two days later, they went on a 24-6 run right out of the gate against Brandon-Evansville that led to a 67-34 Little Eight Conference win.

"This was a very nice win for us," Knick said. "We came off a close game from the other night against Hancock and talked about some adjustments that needed to be made in our defense and offense, and the guys stepped up and executed. Our team defense was very solid, and we made things difficult for them on the offensive end."

Ashby held the Chargers to just 13 points in the opening half. The Arrows shot 48 percent in the first 18 minutes to take a 19-point lead into the break. They continued to roll in the second, shooting 15-of-24 (62 percent) from the field on their way to a 6-0 start to the season.

"On the offensive side, we took good care of the ball and made good decisions," Knick said. "I was really pleased with our contributions off the bench. Mason Johnson and Dylan Barry gave some solid minutes tonight and Jason Odens showed some good things on defense. We are going to need those guys to continue to play well as the season goes on."

J.P. Moe led a balanced Ashby attack with 15 points. Riley Mickelson added 13 points and nine rebounds. Blake Ohren also finished with 13 points, while Tanner Langlie had eight points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Chargers were held to just 28 percent shooting from the field. No player scored in double figures as Zach Hintermeister led the way with eight points. John Haseman led the way on the glass with 10 rebounds. Brandon-Evansville fell to 0-6 heading into the Christmas break.
