Card girls' basketball: Alexandria rushes past Storm 82-53

Eric Morken, Echo Press Senior forward Whitney Gesell fired a shot from the left baseline during the first half on Tuesday night. Gesell hit two threes in the first half on her way to nine points for the Cardinals.

The Cardinal girls' basketball coaches preach a team concept, and they got that kind of team effort to push their winning streak to five games with an easy win over Sauk Rapids-Rice on Tuesday night.

Alexandria had three players in double figures and used its defense to run away in the second half. The Cardinals only deficit came early when they trailed 3-2. They took control after that, putting up 48 points in the first half and going on to win 82-53.

The Cardinals are used to getting big numbers from Lauren Trumm and Amanda Christianson. They got that again against the Storm as Trumm finished with 26 points and Christianson added 21.

Early on, it was senior Whitney Gesell who helped Alexandria start to pull away. The senior forward hit two threes from the right corner in the first half that helped the Cardinals stretch the lead to 26-8.

Alexandria's pressure defense allowed for a lot of easy buckets. Trumm keys that pressure at the top of the Cardinals' zone. She finished with nine steals, many of which came in the first half. That allowed her to get out on the break where she is at her best. Trumm had 18 by halftime as Alexandria held a 48-27 lead.

Junior center Kalli Bowser helped her team pull away after Sauk Rapids had cut that lead to 14 early in the second half. Bowser finished with 10 points on the night, most of which came after halftime as Alexandria pulled away and finished with a season-high 82 points.

Six players scored at least six points. Gesell finished with nine, while Cara Wood and Sarah Bruzek each added six. Wood also dished out five assists as Trumm and Christianson each had four.

The win for Alexandria gave this team a lot of momentum heading into its annual holiday tournament. The Cardinals will once again welcome in Marshall, Robbinsdale Armstrong and Moorhead December 29-30. Alexandria will be looking to win the tournament for the second straight year.
