Card boys' cross country: Redbird boys 13th in stellar field at Meet of Champions

Alexandria finished 13th in a field of 22 teams that included some of the best in the state as well as in the nation during the Alexandria Lions' "Meet of Champions" boys' cross country meet Saturday.

Stillwater, ranked No. 12 in the nation, outran everyone in the field to finish first by 67 points over second place White Bear Lake.

"Our boys' varsity and a JV runner had nine season bests of the 14 races," said head coach Mark Nelsen. "This was impressive considering course conditions were not the best.

"Zac Bartolomeo ran a smart race and his fastest time of his career. Senior Austin Storm also raced very well, running 28 seconds faster than his pervious best," Nelsen said.

Bartolomeo finished 18th overall with a time of 16:43, followed by Will Sieling in 27th in a time of 16:56.

"It was great to see sophomores Trent Piepenburg and Austin Thom run personal bests in a field of this size," Nelsen added. "These two continue to train hard and their best races are in front of them."

Piepenburg and Storm were named runners of the meet for their efforts.

"There is a tremendous amount of preparation, planning and volunteered hours put into an event of this magnitude," said Nelsen. "We appreciate everthing."

The Cardinal coaching staff is assisted in running this event by activities director Dave Hartmann, student activities secretary Sheree Oberg, director of technology Craig Andrews, the School District 206 grounds crew, the Alexandria Evening Lions, the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center staff, parents, alumni, alumni parents and community members who all volunteer.
