Section 5A-North boys' golf: Osakis claims championship

Eric Morken, Echo Press Zac Stein shot a 102 to help the Silverstreak boys win the Section 5A-North boys' golf championship Wednesday and advance Osakis to the Section 5A meet today at Benson.

The Osakis boys' golf team punched its ticket to the Section 5A tournament by winning the North subsection with a team score of 368 last Wednesday.

The Silverstreaks tied with Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley but won the tournament on a fifth-score tiebreaker. Defending champion West Central Area finished third at the meet with a 380, while Ashby was sixth at 387.

Paul Hartmann led Osakis with a second-place finish. He shot an 85, five shots off medalist Tanner Drewlow from CGB. Troy Asseln also qualified for the individual section tournament with a 90. That tied him with WCA's Luke LaValley for fifth place.

His West Central Area teammate Calvin Anderson also qualified for the Section 5A tournament with a 93. Ashby's Mason Johnson (94) and JP Moe (91) did the same.

"Luke had two solid rounds today with no big numbers on his card," Knights' head coach Kraig Hunter said. "Calvin had a real nice first nine and hung in there on the back nine to qualify. We are happy for these two."

Matt Wagner had been solid for West Central Area all season but finished one shot off the qualifying score at Glenwood. He earned All-Heart O' Lakes Conference honors after shooting an 83 in the league meet last Tuesday. That led his team to a sixth-place finish with a 373.

"Matt has not had one bad round all year," Hunter said. "Every one of his rounds has been between 37 and 43. He has just been a model of consistency. It is too bad his only bad round of the year came today. Most of the damage came on two holes as he took a 10 and a seven."

Osakis and the individual qualifiers will now battle for a spot at the state tournament today, Wednesday, when they travel to Benson for the section meet.
