Girls' basketball: Silverstreaks win

The Osakis girls' basketball team broke out of a four-game losing streak with a stifling defensive effort against Swanville last Thursday night.

The Silverstreaks had 28 steals in the game. Many of those came in the second half when they were able to prevent the Swanville offense from hardly ever getting any clean looks at the basket.

"Defensively, we played better the second half then we did the first half," head coach Pat Kalpin said. "I thought we gave up too many easy baskets early in the game, but then they got themselves in better position in the second half. We still need to work on things defensively, but the great thing is that the girls are working really hard."

The Bulldogs were able to stick with Osakis before Danielle Chisholm, Calista Sadlemyer and Annalise Savageau caught fire from the outside. Those three combined for 30 points in the first half. Sadlemyer hit three threes. Savageau had 11 points, and Chisholm hit a deep two from the left corner and was fouled. That three-point play seemed to take the life out of a Bulldog's team that was trying to pick up its second win of the season.

As a group, that trio shot 15-of-30 from the field. Savageau finished with 19 points. Chisholm had 14 points and six steals, while Sadlemyer finished with 11.

"Individually, I felt that Danielle, Annalise and Calista shot the ball well from the perimeter," Kalpin said. "That's the kind of shooting we need on a consistent basis. We still need to work on getting more points in the paint, but that will come as the girls continue to play."

It was a win the Silverstreaks had to have if they are going to finish near the top of the Prairie Conference. Their four-game losing streak included just one loss in league play. The win over Swanville moved them to 2-1 in the Prairie, with the only loss coming to an undefeated Upsala team.

"This was a much needed win for our team tonight," Kalpin said. "We went through a tough stretch of games that past few weeks, and it was nice to see our girls play the way they played."
