MGA golf: Diekman, Vangsness qualify for MGA state amateur
Alexandria's Gordy Diekman shot a 66 on the par 72 Eagle Creek Golf Club in Willmar to finish first in the 107th Minnesota Golf Association Amateur qualifier last Thursday.
Diekman was one of three qualifiers in last Thursday's round, outshooting Timothy Franzeen of the Oakdale Golf Club and Tony Krogen of the Marshall Golf Club who tied for second with even par 72s.
Casey Vangsness of Alexandria was one of the 16 qualifiers at the amateur qualifier at Wapicada Golf Club in Sauk Rapids last Wednesday.
Vangsness carded a round of 76 to tie for ninth.
Alexandria's Chris Sholts did not advance after finishing with an 80, tying him for 32nd.
Minnewaska's Evan Peters finished with no score entered at Wapicada and Alexandria's Will Harris finished with a no score entered at Bellwood Oaks in Hastings.
The top 16 finishers and three alternates are selected to advance.
The MGA Amateur is now one of the largest golfing events in the state. Nearly 900 people enter the championship every year. It takes more than a dozen qualifying sites around the state to narrow down the competitors to a starting field of 156.
