Middle school softball sign-up

Any Alexandria 7th or 8th grade girls who plan to play softball this spring should pick up registration forms at the student service window at Discovery Middle School.

These forms, plus the $45 participation fee, must be turned in to the office at DMS before the first day of practice on Monday, April 12 at 3 p.m.

A parent/player meeting will follow practice that same day at 5 p.m. in the aux gymnasium at Discovery. Parents should plan to attend this meeting with their athlete.

Middle school FCA


The middle school Fellowship of Christian Athletes will meet this Sunday, March 28, from 2:30-4 p.m.

The group will be playing ultimate Frisbee on the turf at the Runestone Community Center hockey arena. Snacks and drinks will be served. Call Tim Urness at (320) 846-5303.

Atikwa men's golf league

The Atikwa men's golf league will be starting at the end of April. An exact date will be determined later.

Prairie to Woods Whitetails meeting

The Prairie to Woods Whitetails will hold its annual spring exposition on March 27 at the Parkers Prairie Event Center.

The exposition will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Speakers will include Kip Adams, a Quality Deer Management Association biologist, and Marrett Grund, a Department of Natural Resources farmland deer project leader.

There will be seminars on potential rule changes coming to Minnesota, 2009 central Minnesota deer hunter survey and antler point studies and information on food plots that provide the best nutrition for deer.

A number of great raffle drawings will also take place. A two-acre flood plot planting and a 500 tree-planting project will be raffled off. Brush clearing and gun raffles will also be going on during the event. Admission is free.

Miltona Tuesday men's golf league meeting

The Miltona Tuesday men's golf league spring meeting will be Tuesday, April 6 at 7 p.m. at the Miltona clubhouse.

YMCA Grapefruit League T-ball

The Alexandria YMCA will hold a Grapefruit League T-ball program for grade pre-kindergarten through grade 2 beginning April 7.

The Wednesday program will provide the fundamentals of baseball, and will be held indoors for three weeks, followed by four weeks outdoors (weather permitting).

Dates of the program will be April 7, 14, 21, 28 and May 5, 12 and 19.

Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten players will meet at Lincoln Elementary School from 5:30-6:15 p.m. Cost is $28.50.

Grades 1-2 will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the same location. Cost is $38.

FCA Easter breakfast

The Alexandria Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) will hold its annual Easter Breakfast at the Garden Center ballroom Thursday, April 1, from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m.

The speaker will be Steve Johnson, coach of the Bethel University football team. Johnson has been the head football coach for the Royals for 21 seasons. All are welcome to attend.

Junior Cardinal T-ball

Round two of the Junior Cardinal T-ball program for players from pre-kindergarten through grade 2 will be held Saturdays beginning June 5 at the Lincoln Elementary School.

The program will emphasize the fundamentals of baseball.

Cost for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten players is $28.50. They will meet from 9:30-10:15 a.m.

Cost for players in grades 1-2 will be $38. They will meet from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Dates of the program are June 5, 12, 19, 26 and July 3, 10 and 17.

Chain of Lakes Triathlon

The 2010 Chain of Lakes Triathlon is Saturday, May 1, and registrations are filling quickly.

Those interested in competing should go to for the online registration.

The triathlon is coordinated by volunteers through the Alexandria Swim Club, and proceeds from the event are used to help fund local recreation organizations.

Minnesota Comets spring basketball tryouts

The Minnesota Comets will hold spring basketball tryouts on these days and times.

Sunday, March 28:

Boys grade 9 - 9-10:30 a.m.; boys grades 10-11 - 10:30 a.m.-noon (invite only); girls 14U and 15U (grades 9-10) - 12:30-2 p.m.; girls 16U/junior eligible (grade 11) - 2-3:30 p.m.; boys grades 10-11 - 3:30-5 p.m.

Perham boys' basketball tournament

Perham will hold boys' basketball tournaments on April 10 and 11.

Grades 3, 6, 7 and 8 will play on April 10, and grades 4, 5 and 9 will play April 11.

Lakes Area Endurance and Jeff and Jackie Leslie memorial

The Lakes Area Endurance and Jeff and Jackie Leslie Memorial half-marathon, 5K and family fun walk/run mile is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 14-15 in Alexandria.

The family fun walk/run and 5K are set for Friday at the Lakes Community Church, with the walk/run beginning at 6 p.m. and the 5K at 6:30 p.m., with a spaghetti banquet at 7:30 p.m.

Cost is $10 for the walk/run and $20 in advance ($25 the day of the race) for the 5K and includes the meal.

The half-marathon is Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at the Lake Geneva Center, with registration beginning at 6:30 a.m. Cost is $35 in advance ($40 the day of the race).

The events are hosted by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and Lakes Community Church.

Minnewaska 6th grade tourney

The Minnewaska Basketball Association and the Minnewaska Laker Foundation are holding a 6th grade boys' basketball tournament on Saturday, April 10 at the Minnewaska High School gymnasium.

Teams will be accepted on a first paid basis. Entry fee is $100 with a three-game guarantee.

Deadline for entry is April 1.

Semi Pro football team looking for players

The Semi Pro Football League (SPFL) is looking for players to join the newly formed Alexandria Lightning.

The schedule will include four or five road games and as many home games, which will be played at Citizens Field.

Players do not receive a salary and will be required to pay for their own equipment.

The Aberdeen, South Dakota YMCA will hold its 39th annual boys' basketball tournament March 26-27.

The West Central Area Hoops booster club will hold a basketball tournament for boys in grades 4-8 Saturday, March 27 in Barrett and Elbow Lake.

There will be a boys' basketball tournament at Fargo South April 10-11, 2010 for grades 5-9 and high school.

Each team is guaranteed three games.
