LETTER: A look into Southern Poverty Law Center
To the editor:
In a recent letter to the editor in the Echo Press, I saw someone refer to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as a source of "complete accurate information." Since the editorial staff of this newspaper also made a statement supporting the SPLC a short while back, perhaps it is time to take a closer look at this organization.
From their website, "The SPLC was founded in 1971 to ensure that the promise of the civil rights movement became a reality for all." Certainly a noble goal. Other sources describe how the SPLC came to prominence when they sued and won a major case against the United Klans of America (KKK) including a substantial financial award that pushed the KKK into bankruptcy.
Since that time, the SPLC has created "Hatewatch." From their website, "Hatewatch is a blog that monitors and exposes the activities of the American radical right." They also have a "Hate Map."
So who are some of the organizations on their "hate" list? Their website lists the following: American Family Association, Alliance Defending Freedom, D. James Kennedy Ministries, Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, and Liberty Council, just to name a few. The common thread among these groups are they hold conservative Biblical beliefs.
So just be careful who you use for your source of "complete accurate information."
