Politicians’ pay and insurance should stop during shutdown

To the editor:

I have a suggestion that I feel would help avoid government shutdowns in the future.

There should be a law put in place that if there is a government shutdown, the pay of every senator and every representative and our president and vice-president would stop at that moment and when the government was restarted again, their pay would not be retroactive. That pay would be lost forever.

Even more, their health insurance should stop and that too when restarted should not be retroactive. If they are hospitalized during the shutdown, that bill would come out of their pocket.

This would go a long way in getting a more responsible form of government.
