Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down: Views by the Echo Press

SUCCESSFUL SHERIFF’S SHOW Thumbs Up: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Posse and Deputy Sheriff’s Federation’s country music show featuring Wade Hayes and Kalisa Ewing was a big hit. “We would like to thank everyone who attended and also the business sponsors who contributed to the show,” said Ron Boyden, sheriff’s federation president. “This annual event allows us to function throughout the year, whether it is training posse members so they can assist at requested events or allowing the sheriff’s federation to support any number of youth, education or community events. This year’s show was excellent and the planning for next year has already begun.”

INSPIRING MESSAGE Thumbs Up: The Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge fundraising event at Arrowwood delivered an inspiring message of how people with addictions can turn their lives around. Senator Bill Ingebrigtsen and his wife, Marilyn, were among the more than 500 residents who attended. “I was inspired by the testimonies of the students in the program but more amazed at the number of people at the event,” said the senator. “It was a profound exhibit of compassion and generosity from the area we live in. Lives and families are being changed in this program. I am humbled by the work of God in this program and more so in this community. I applaud the organizers of the event and the leaders of this program. I am so very proud to represent and belong to this great community.”

YOUNG PEOPLE HELPING HUNGRY Thumbs Up: The Outreach Food Shelf sends a “thumbs up” to the young people in the Jefferson High School Honor Society. They spent their Halloween trick-or-treating for food donations and collected 2,124 pounds of food, along with $135. “That’s a ton of food,” said food shelf leaders. “It seems that we always hear about the kids that are messing up, acting out, or are bad examples to the younger kids. We wanted to express our sincere thanks to these great kids, who showed a wonderful example of helping those in need. We at the Douglas County Outreach Food Shelf want to thank the teenagers for collecting all the food and send a big thanks to the great people of Alexandria who donated all of the food.”

A PRAYER FOR A SPECIAL LADY Thumbs Up: We recently received an e-mail about taking pride in one’s country, which is fitting for Veterans Day. Here it is: “I have a prayer request. There’s a lady I’ve known forever. She’s very sick. On top of that, she’s being abused by those to whom she has given everything. Lies about her abound, and seem to come from all sides. Just breaks my heart. Seems there’s nothing I can do alone but maybe, if we join in and lift her up together, we can heal her. She’s well over 230 years old, but way too young to die. Her name is ‘America.’ And I love her and have always been proud of her. Take time to say a prayer for her, even if it is a short, simple prayer like, ‘Lord, please heal our land. Amen.’ ”
