In the Know: What is going on in Alexandria?

The town is bustling with people this summer, which is great to see. Lots of fun activities going on in town! Join in the fun!

The Broadway reconstruction project has gotten a lot of accolades. We won the Excellence in Service Award from the League of Minnesota Cities for the project. The nice thing about that was that it won due to the emphasis on communication and people getting together to get something done. We also have the Broadway project featured in the Aggregate and Ready Mix Association magazine. An interesting fact about that is the project used 5,186.5 cubic yards of cement. Also, the project is featured in the Lakes Country Service Cooperative Magazine. We are very proud!

What else is going on in Alexandria this summer you ask? Construction projects in and around the city are in full swing: 50th Avenue over by the new high school is coming along very nicely, and will really be a great improvement. It is due to open mid-August, so watch for that. Water project phase 4, part 2 is also in full swing so if you are in that area you will notice work going on. Also, we have completed many overlay projects, so you will note nice, new pavements in many areas of the city. Our street crews have worked very hard this summer.

Our city budgeting process has begun and we meet once a week for about 4 hours per session discussing budgets with department heads and requests from various entities. We consider this one of the most important things we do as a city. The budget committee this year is Marty Schultz, Council Member Todd Jensen, and me. We will have a preliminary budget ready to present to the council in about a month.

We are in the process of strategic planning for our city. This has entailed three meetings with council, mayor, staff and department heads all weighing in on the important things in our city. Looking for a vision and the way we want the city to grow, what areas are important growth areas and positioning the city for the future. You will be hearing more about this as we move forward to set goals for all of us.

I want to introduce you to city staff as I write these articles, so you feel comfortable contacting the city any time to ask a question or get help on any topic. This time I want to introduce you to Marty Schultz, our city administrator.

Marty is a homegrown Alexandrian; born and raised here, graduating from JHS in 1993. He attended the U of M and Minnesota State University of Mankato for graduate work. Marty worked in Florida, Wabasha, MN, and Duluth in the planning and development capacity. We are fortunate that he and his wife Heidi and their twins returned to Alexandria.

He started here in 2004 working as assistant city planner and was soon promoted to assistant city administrator. He took over the helm of the city two years ago and has led the city in a positive and productive direction.

Feel free to contact Marty or me in regard to any issues or ideas you might have for the future of Alexandria!
