1989: Tara Withers and Jennifer Hilde named Osakis Royalty

Liz Galvin of Osakis, who has taken care of 24 stray cats and continues to get more, discovered her most recent care patient when a kitten leaped out of the high branches of a tree.

Friday, July 2 was the official grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Osakis Information Center. Osakis mayor Gary Astleford cut the ribbon.

Kyle Hoium of Osakis has signed an institutional letter of intent to play basketball with the University of Minnesota, Morris Cougars next year.

July 4, 1989

The new royalty for the Osakis Festival were Tara Withers as Miss Osakis 1989 and Jennifer Hilde as Junior Miss Osakis 1989.

Timothy Lee Thornbloom, 5-month-old son of Rick and Judy Thornbloom, was the first prize winner in the Baby of the Year contest. He was the winner of a $50 savings bond.

The personal collection of local Indian artifacts owned by Dave Owens of Osakis was viewed by people making the Heritage Center’s historical sites tour. He began collecting Indian artifacts in 1945.

July 9, 1964

Three Osakis Boy Scouts received the prestigious Eagle Award: Jim Sargent, Mike Peterson and Ken Peterson.

Plans were made to rope off the swimming area at the village beach to protect the swimmers from an increasing number of boaters and water skiers.

Otto Clark, veteran rural Osakis lawmaker, filed for re-election to the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Most Minnesota Selective Service Boards will begin to order 18-year-old registrants for complete examination by the Armed Forces. The examination does not mean that they face early induction.

July 6, 1939

Four-year-old Dean Rutten, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Rutten, suffered a close escape from serious injury when he fell out of the car in which he was riding onto the blacktop road that leads into Glenwood.

The management of the Osakis O-T-W League team announces that this coming week will be set aside here in celebration of the 100th anniversary of organized baseball.

The Rev. E.R. Horton, pastor of Osakis Presbyterian Church, received a letter from the stated clerk of the general assembly of the church, congratulating the church for having received 100 or more members during the last ecclesiastical year.
