It's Our Turn: Summer is here, for now

After a fairly cool spring, the summer-like weather we all enjoy finally arrived last week in the form of 70 and 80 degree days. This warming trend helped everyone breathe a sigh of relief as we were assured that summer is almost here.

This is the time of year that makes you glad that you live in Minnesota.

When the weather finally turned nice, I was more than thrilled to shed the jacket that I have been toting around all spring. Instead, I am now sporting polo shirts and using this as an opportunity to begin working on my farmer’s tan.

As much as I enjoy the winter and cross country skiing, there is nothing like the first weeks of summer when the weather starts to get warm. These are the days when the pleasant weather conditions bring everyone out of their homes to enjoy our local parks and trails. It is hard to believe, but we will take these conditions for granted later in the summer.

No longer do I have to estimate the amount of time I will spend outside in a day while dressing myself in the morning. Now I will spend every possible second outside basking in the warm weather.

After spending plenty of time outside training for cross country skiing in below zero temperatures this winter, I do not mind a little sweat. It’s nice to do an extended workout in the outdoors without worrying about my toes and fingers becoming numb.

Right now, I don’t even mind the high humidity that we often feel in our Minnesota summers. I have welcomed this with open arms just for the fact that I am not freezing cold.

Warmer weather almost gives me an extra jolt of energy, especially compared to a cold winter day when I feel like I should stop moving entirely.

I reached these warm weather conclusions while I was outside on Memorial Day watching the Twins play the Rangers at Target Field. Summer conditions are exactly why the Twins built an outdoor ballpark in the first place.

What better way to enjoy some nice weather conditions than outside watching a major league ball game?

Minnesota sports fans were robbed of this when they were forced to spend 28 seasons indoors at the Metrodome.

One of my favorite things about this time of year is the fact that I have a smaller volume of clothes to wash each week. Without those extra layers, I can get away with doing fewer loads of laundry per week.

We earn this perfect weather every year by suffering through Minnesota’s cold winters and springs. Of course, we must endure these cold temperatures in order to truly enjoy the summer weather.

My objective over the next three months will be to spend every possible second outside enjoying the warmer weather. I will welcome anyone who wants to join me in this mission. Before you know it, we will be bracing for another Minnesota winter. So get your time in the sun while you still can.
