09/05/2008 12:00 AM Thumbs Up: Almost lost in the Labor Day aftermath, the crush of news over Hurricane Gustav and political headlines, was the passing of an important date in history – September 2, “Victory Over Japan Day,” commonly known as “VJ Day.”
09/05/2008 12:00 AM I recently became one of the toughest bikers you’ve probably ever seen.
I’m not talking a biker of the pedaling variety. I’m talking a bad to the bone, don’t take no crap from no one, motorcycle riding biker dude.
09/05/2008 12:00 AM Why are so many people lately ending their conversational statements as questions?
"I'm going to the store now?" someone will say.
"OK," I say. "Go then. You don't have to ask me."
Where did this quizzical trend come from? I hope it ends soon.
09/05/2008 12:00 AM In response to a letter to the editor, “Central sewer is an investment, not expense” (Echo Press, 8/20/2008), a proponent for the central sewer misses several key issues important to the antis.
09/05/2008 12:00 AM We all want to protect our beautiful lakes. Why have we been led to believe that a central sewer system is the best way to accomplish that? We hear dire projections of how many of our individual septic systems are failing (and yet, water quality in our lakes has improved the last several years).
09/03/2008 12:00 AM While running through the list of candidates a lot of questions can run through a voter’s mind: Who are these people? What are their backgrounds? Should I even vote for someone I’ve never heard of? Help?!
09/03/2008 12:00 AM As a resident of the CLRSD, I am glad that the sewer cost actually decreased. For the $300,000 property, it went from $120/month average for 30 years to $116/month.
08/29/2008 12:00 AM Trying to “live green” – the buzz phrase for becoming more environmentally conscious – doesn’t have to be a complex, arduous task.
You can keep the environment in mind while doing practically anything in your daily life, such as back-to-school shopping.
08/29/2008 12:00 AM I am going to devote my column space this week to expand on the thoughts shared by Lori Mork, Echo Press sports editor, in last week’s “Our Turn.”
Lori wrote about the frustration she encounters from readers who think newspaper staff should automatically be aware of and cover every event going on.
08/29/2008 12:00 AM Choosing to vote in the September 9 Republican primary for Alan Roebke is a progressive vote to put all the issues on the table for 7th District residents to see and understand before they vote for a new Congressman in November.
08/29/2008 12:00 AM Three of our commissioners, Bales, Johnson and Salto, voted to spend $6.4 million more of our tax dollars on a new public works facility that was never requested, nor needed.
08/29/2008 12:00 AM Let's see, how many banks does Alexandria boast? Does greater Douglas County have enough financial institutions? One more won't hurt, right?
08/29/2008 12:00 AM This letter is to Mr. Road Bicycle Rider, wearing a black and green jersey, riding the Central Lakes Trail to Osakis at approximately 2:40 p.m. on August 18. Do you always pass riders in the right lane on their right side? Know the rules?
08/27/2008 12:00 AM With the September 9 primary just ahead, the Echo Press would like to remind readers and letter writers of its policy concerning political letters.
08/27/2008 12:00 AM We recently learned that Douglas County Board member Bev Bales circulated a personal letter that she entitled “The Truth about County Road 42.” The letter was filled with false and erroneous allegations leveled against Lake Carlos Area Association and its attorneys.
08/27/2008 12:00 AM My information letter was written in response to numerous phone calls, e-mails and letters from the public as to, “What’s going on with 42?” I am still hearing that question.
08/27/2008 12:00 AM The newspaper contacted Douglas County Highway Engineer Dave Robley to respond to some of the issues raised in the lake associations’ commentary.
