Stanley G. Norlien
Stanley G. Norlien
Stanley G. Norlien was born March 29, 1931, in rural Kensington, to Arthur and Christine Norlien. He was baptized and confirmed in the Pike Lake Covenant Church where his parents were long-time members. He was active in sports, loved playing basketball and baseball while at Kensington High School. He also played with the town team for many years. Stan was united in marriage to Mary Barsness on January 9, 1954. They were blessed with four children: Dawn, Jana, Scott, and Kristin. Stan loved being a father and grandfather, he enjoyed being with his family so much, and felt rewarded becoming a great grandfather.
Stan first worked for Gulf Oil Company in Rockford, IL. On their return to Farwell, MN he worked for the Amoco Oil Company, owning his own business, and retired at 75. He ran his business for 51 years with honesty and integrity. Hard work wasn't hard for him. He was loyal to his customers and they were more to him than business acquaintances, they were friends.
Stan was a long-time member of First Lutheran Church. He was an active member serving on the church board at First Lutheran and at Farwell Lutheran Church. He loved being a part of a small men's group bible study and made close friends with all the guys he met through it.
Stan was a truly loyal friend, a quiet man, unassuming without pretense of any kind. He was always non-judgemental and felt sincerity was the best way to live, a patient and loving husband, a great dad, the best 'Bumpa' to all his grandchildren and absolutely loved by all.
Stan thoroughly enjoyed gardening and had beautiful, meticulous gardens and shrubs. He loved nature and was a kind man. He treated everyone equally and compassionately, including his and anyone elses pet. Even the birds and other animals listened to what he had to say and seemed to revere him.
He loved to play guitar and the family loved to sing along especially on the North Shore of Lake Superior (Wally World) which was one of his favorite places, along with the National Parks.
Stan died on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Dawn (Dave) Prchal of Alexandria, Jana (Steve) Maack of Alexandria, Scott (Sherry) Norlien of Garfield, and Kristin (Kent) Kirn of Stanley, WI; seven grandchildren: Brody (Sarah) Maack, Whitney (Micah) Savage, Nali Prchal (Neil Lindner), Dominic and Kyle Christofilis, Heather Gilbertson, and Rachel (Travis) Lian; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Arley (Ruby) Norlien of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews. Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Christine; brother, Kenneth Norlien; and sister-in-law, Doris Norlien.
As for hospice, they are angels from heaven and their unending compassion, in every way, has brought us to this point. Their graciousness and love has truly been a gift from God and will be a long-remembered experience.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Reverend Greg Billberg officiating. Entombment was held at Geneva Cemetery in Alexandria.
