Tennis: Cards fall just short of Tech

The Alexandria girls tennis team gave perennially-tough St. Cloud Tech everything it could handle on Tuesday night.

The Cardinals swept the doubles lineup against the Tigers, but Tech had just a little bit more depth by returning the favor in the singles lineup to secure a 4-3 win.

“The girls fought hard and the effort was there, but that fourth point is hard to come by against a good team like Tech,” Alexandria head coach Dave Ronning said.

Madison Ressemann and Abby Sater set the tone in the doubles lineup at the top spot as they won 6-4, 6-2. Joria Downing and Kaylee Svee had an even easier time of things as they dropped just one game, while Taylor Sayre and Whitly Netland added a 6-0, 6-3 win at the third spot.

The singles spots saw Alexandria battle but not able to overcome the Tigers as Tech won every match in straight sets. Alexandria’s Annie Harding gave her opponent the toughest time but ultimately fell in a 6-4, 6-3 final at third singles.

“Tech has four solid singles players and they had just too much fire power for our four singles players,” Ronning said. “Annie Harding had the closest match of the bunch as she held her own with her opponent, but too many unforced errors were her downfall. Laura (Wilmesmeier) also battled hard but had very little to show for her efforts, winning just four games.”

The loss was Alexandria’s first in Central Lakes Conference play. The Cardinals fell to 3-1 in league play and 7-3 overall with CLC power Brainerd coming to Alexandria this Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
