Helping Christian boys

As deadly shootings focusing national attention on the plight of American boys and young men, the Unity Foundation is holding a one-day summit for parents, church leaders and teachers of boys and young men.

Called "The Helping Christian Boys Thrive Summit," it will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Lake Geneva Christian Center, 605 Birch Ave., in Alexandria.

Speakers are Michael Gurian, a New York Times bestselling author of "The Wonder of Boys," and Tim Wright, pastor of Community of Grace in Arizona, which he founded in 2005.

"Our boys need us now in ways they have not before," Gurian says. "They are being raised in a very complex world and many of their support systems and developmental frameworks have crumbled. As we bring our passionate attention to boys today, and come together to nurture, support and educate them well, we give a gift not only to them, but to our families, communities and culture."

The summit will look at what boys need and how they are needed, how to protect their emotional lives and how to to call them to follow Jesus, among other topics.

Tickets are available at Common Ground Coffee House or the Mustard Seed Market, with more information and registration at
