Gary Robert Nyland

Gary Robert Nyland was born November 27, 1948 in Clarkfield, MN, the son of Olaf "Ole" and Eleanor (Lideen) Nyland. Gary graduated from Brewster High School and attended Dakota State College, Madison SD, majoring in Speech and Drama, with a minor in Art. He graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Gary taught Art at Swea City Iowa High School and directed the Junior and Senior class plays. After teaching, he started a career in the restaurant business, managing or working in several restaurants, where he became a valued, experienced and loyal employee who enjoyed the people and the challenges. He will be missed.

Gary was a man of many talents. His artistic and creative abilities resulted in many paintings, sculptures and carvings over the years. Most were given as gifts to family and friends. He was known for his quick sense of humor and straightforward honesty. He lived life on his own terms.

Gary died on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at the age of 69. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Eleanor. He is survived by his sister, Sandra Holck and husband Wayne; niece, Jenn Holck of Cottage Grove, nephew, Jeremy Holck (Kathleen Beterams) of Brooklyn Park; great niece and nephew, Clara and Alex Waibel of Cottage Grove; uncle, Allen Burmaster (Kim) of Vancouver WA; aunt, Esther Donner, Montevideo and a number of cousins. A memorial service will take place at a later date.
