Babe Ruth baseball: Brandon-Evansville team is state tournament bound

The Brandon-Evansville Babe Ruth baseball team earned a trip to state after finishing as the champion in the Lake Region South District tournament recently.

Brandon-Evanville finished first overall to Ottertail Central, with both teams advancing to the State 13-15 Babe Ruth tournament in Fergus Falls that began yesterday, Thursday, and continues through Sunday.

Coached by Trent Hintermeister, the B/E squad took care of Parkers Prairie in the first round 7-5 as Robbie Juul pitched three and a third innings, allowing just one earned run. James Huisman relieved Juul, pitching the final three and two-thirds while allowing one earned run. The other two runs were unearned, coming on four errors.

Game two was against the Fergus Falls Vipers, with Brandon-Evansville picking up a win in the second game 4-3 on a walk-off single by Kevin Campbell that drove in Huisman.

Jordan Lund got the pitching win as he went the distance, giving up just two earned runs.

Brandon-Evansville had to face Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in their third game, winning 10-0 in a run-shortened, five-inning contest.

Zach Johnson earned the win on the mound, going all five frames while allowing just three hits and not walking a batter. He struck out four DGF batters in the win.

Brandon-Evansville faced top-seeded Ottertail Central on Saturday in the championship of the double elimination tournament, and BE dropped the opener 7-5.

Tom Bosek took the loss, giving up just three earned runs while striking out six.

A four-run second inning allowed OTC to take the lead 4-1, but BE tied the game at four, then again at five after the fifth frame.

OTC's Nick Trosdahl put his team out ahead, and an insurance run in the sixth gave them the lead for good.

BE had one last chance to stop the top seed, topping OTC 11-7 in game two to claim the crown.

"James Huisman pitched all seven innings, proving why he is one of the team's leaders," said Hintermeister.

Brandon-Evansville led 6-1 after two innings as six walks, a hit batter and a pair of hits allowed BE to put five runs on the board in the second. The team then added three runs in the fourth before OTC scored five in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap to 9-6.

OTC added another run in the sixth, but Brandon-Evansville put up a two-spot in the seventh to secure the win.

Kevin Campbell, Robbie Juul, Brandon Christianson, Zach Johnson, Jordan Lund, Tom Bosek, McKenon Plaster, Jeremiah Betterman, Evan Bedore, James Huisman, Troy Fuller, Pat McGaffey, Christian McGaffey and Kannen Lund are the 14 members of the B/E Babe Ruth team this year.

The team faced Sauk Centre in the opening round yesterday, Thursday. Action continues through Sunday at the American Legion baseball fields in Fergus Falls.
