Girls' golf: Another state trip for Minnewaska
As they have in so many meets this and past seasons, the Laker girls' golf team cruised to a 48-stroke win to earn another trip to state.
And, as they have done so many times in the past, they had the top four individual scores.
This time, Minnewaska was playing in a new section, having moved from Section 6AA to 3AA this season, knocking off defending champ Jackson County Central.
The Lakers are now one step closer to adding another state title to their record four straight, but will have to get by the only Class AA team to give them trouble this year as Red Wing captured the Section 1AA title.
Minnewaska was able to edge out the Wingers by just two strokes at the prestigious Red Wing Invitational a couple of weeks back in one of just two meets won by the Lakers in single digits.
The other was Class AAA Edina, which lost to Minnewaska by three strokes at Irondale in mid-April.
On Thursday, senior Sarah Roering and sophomore Brianna Janu shared medalist honors as the two finished their 18-hole rounds with 2-over par 75s.
Senior Allie Ostrander was one stroke off the lead with a 76, and junior Sam Falk trailed the medalists by three to round out the top four spots in the section meet.
Alexis Guggisberg carded an 89 and Jenna Janu a 91 to finish off the Laker scoring for the day.
Five of Minnewaska's players were starters on last year's team, which lost Emily Roering, the Class AA champion in 2009.
Lakers are Sub-section champs
Minnewaska, led by Ostrander, posted the top four scores in the Section 3AA-Northeast meet at Benson last Friday to advance to the section meet.
Roering was second with a 75, J. Janu came in at 87 and Falk at 88.
