Evansville School to get new roof


The roof over the gym at the Evansville School will soon be replaced.

At its monthly meeting Monday night, the Brandon-Evansville School Board approved Buttweiler's Do-All from Alexandria to do the work.

Superintendent Dean Yocum told school board members that he received two proposals from the company — one for a ballast roof and one for an adhered roof. The board approved the adhered roof, which Dean said was a better option and under the projected cost. Yocum said the adhered roof will cost $39,330.

Facility talk

Yocum and board members discussed how the school district would be moving forward with its facility plans.

After a short discussion, the board directed Yocum to set meetings with four different companies, including Johnson Controls, ICS Consulting, JLG Architects and Kraus Anderson. The meetings would take place on two different days, as early as June, and will be open to the public.

The school board is looking for a consulting firm to help the district with its facility needs/issues. Yocum said these companies can help in the planning of another referendum.

One board member brought up the cost of having the companies do their presentation and Yocum said there shouldn't be any cost because the companies would be making their pitch to the district about why the district should hire them.

School Board Chairman David Anderson said he may be stepping on some toes, but that he's not willing to "spend a bunch of money to educate people who should have been paying attention the first time."

School board member Tim Lauthen said the district needs a way to move forward. He was the one who made the suggestion to have the meetings.

"We need to have a full board for the presentations," said Lauthen.

Last fall, a referendum in the Brandon-Evansville School District that would have built a brand new K-12 school in Brandon failed handily. The two school campuses — one in Brandon and one in Evansville — are aging and both buildings have their share of issues, including non-secure entrances, roof leaks and boiler problems.
