Alexandria Math Team competes in St. Cloud

A total of 35 students in grades 7-11 from Alexandria's Discovery Middle School and Jefferson High School traveled to St. Cloud on Thursday, March 29 to compete in the St. Cloud State University Math Contest.

Students received awards for placing 1st through 3rd and for being in either the top 5 percent or the top 10 percent.

Local students who received awards include:

7th grade: Out of 464 participants, Laura Timm placed in the top 10 percent earning a 43rd place finish.

8th grade: Out of 601 participants, Matthew Bittmann finished in 7th place and Jake Wheeler placed 38th.

9th grade: Out of 222 participants, Eric Branch finished 8th and Mitchell Maday placed 14th.

10th grade: Out of 191 participants, Ben Tollefson finished in 8th and Mark Kallevig placed 11th.

11th grade: Out of 167 participants, Taylor Score finished in 15th place.

Team scores were calculated by combining the top three individual scores at each grade level. During the individual test, students had 60 minutes to complete 30 to 35 rigorous problems.
