Discovery orchestras do well at MNSOTA festivals

The Discovery Middle School Concert Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra recently participated in the Minnesota String and Orchestra Teachers Association (MNSOTA) Middle Level orchestra festivals held at the Hopkins Center for the Arts and Monticello High School.

Both orchestras received recognition for high standards of musical excellence. The Concert Orchestra was awarded two superior ratings and the Philharmonic Orchestra was awarded an excellent and a superior rating.

The Concert Orchestra is made up of 8th and 9th grade students. The Philharmonic Orchestra members are in 7th and 8th grade.

The festival is sponsored each year by MNSOTA. Festivals this year were held in four locations throughout the state. Students have the opportunity to hear other middle school orchestras, a formal performance with a student audience, a written and oral critique, and a 30-minute clinic session.

Both orchestras are under the direction of Peggy Atwood.
