Veterans encouraged to attend county meeting

Members of the Veterans Council in Douglas County are encouraging all veterans in the area to attend next week's Douglas County Commissioner's meeting.

A work session to discuss veterans issues is set to follow the regular board meeting and is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 11:50 a.m. in the commissioner's meeting room on the second floor of the courthouse, 305 Eighth Ave. W.

The issues to be discussed during the work sessions, according to the Veterans Council, are as follows:

• Pay for volunteer drivers.

• Location of the Veterans Service Office in the county's services building. Veterans prefer the current location because of privacy, easy to access, windows in the office and convenient, private place to wait while someone else is in the office.

• Request for the Veterans Service Office administrative position to be a standalone position, appointed by the county board every four years. The Veterans Service Office would also report directly to the county board and not to a social services administrator.
