B-E facility committee work to start in April
Volunteer committees to assess the facilities needs of the Brandon-Evansville School District should begin meeting in April, the superintendent says.
Superintendent Dean Yocum told board members Monday night at the regular school board that meeting dates have not yet been set.
The meetings were originally set to start earlier this month, but scheduling conflicts have kept them from taking place, Yocum said.
The community facility committees were formed to take a look at the facility needs of the school district after a failed referendum last fall. The $38.75 million bond referendum would have allowed the construction of a new K-12 school in Brandon.
In an earlier interview with the newspaper, Yocum said there are between 15 and 30 community members signed up for each of the three committees:
• Physical: Looking at physical conditions of both the Brandon and Evansville schools, as well as operations, quality, site evaluation, technology infrastructure, safety and security.
• Educational: Looking at enrollment, capacity, grade configuration, educational adequacy, technology for instruction and program issues.
• Activities and community: Looking at athletics, performances, activities, community use and partnerships.
The committees were proposed by Vaughn Dierks from Wold Architects and Engineers at a community meeting in December. Dierks is helping the school district as it moves forward with its facility issues.
Yocum said that "things are moving forward" and that Dierks said that if the school district plans on another referendum vote in November, there's "still time to accomplish that."
He also said there were three individuals from Wold Architects who visited the school district recently and toured its facilities, taking notes on the buildings.
"I haven't seen the results from their reports as of yet," Yocum told the board.
