Spelling bee winners crowned

Sixty-three students in grades 1-5 participated in the Alexandria Public Schools Elementary Spelling Bee held Jan. 26 at Woodland Elementary.

Below are the district grade level winners and the two words they spelled correctly to win the competition.

1st Grade: Jonah Monette from Voyager — bridge and uproar (Runner Up - Stella Olson from Garfield)

2nd Grade: Lucas Korman from Miltona — parlor and seaweed (Runner Up - Brody Zappe from Carlos)

3rd Grade: Joshua Makalinao from Woodland — marriage and immature (Runner Up - Thomas Dutcher from Garfield)

4th Grade: Miles Bryce from Woodland — instructor and laminate (Runner Up - Samara Groetsch from Carlos)

5th Grade:Monroe Glade from Voyager — pessimistic and cymbal (Runner Up - Maia Fuglestad from Woodland)

The top scoring students during the written portion of the competition advanced to the oral round. They were:

1st Grade: Monette, Olson and Jackson Crouse (Voyager)

2nd Grade: Korman, Brooke Persons (Voyager), Addy Auran (Lincoln), Mason Chalmers (Woodland), and Zappe.

3rd Grade: Makalinao, Dutcher and Addy Erickson (Woodland)

4th Grade: Groetsch, Bryce and Rhett Granning (Lincoln)

5th Grade: Glade, Moriah Evenson (Garfield), Fuglestad, and Corryn Kramer (Carlos)

'Nunsense auditions'

Feel like adding to the fun of community theater?

Auditions for the musical comedy "Nunsense" are at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12-13 at Andria Theatre in Alexandria.

This comedy features five nuns who are putting on a fundraiser to be able to bury four remaining nuns of the 55 who were poisoned by the cook's tainted vichyssoise.

Please come prepared to sing a 30-60 second piece; be so kind as to bring the sheet music. There will be some movement taught so comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. Reading from the script and acting out imaginary situations will also happen.
