Construction begins on County Road 12
Construction began on County Road 12 Monday between Garfield and County Road 58 northwest of Alexandria. The $1.2 million project is expected to be completed by mid-October.
A detour has been set up on County Roads 58, 109, 82 and 22, according to Dave Robley, Douglas County Public Works director.
In a news release, Robley said the first step will be to grind up the existing asphalt surface as the material will then be salvaged and used as a temporary gravel surface. Construction work is expected to begin at County Road 58 and move south toward Garfield.
"This project will improve the curves and provide wider shoulders for increased safety," said Robley in the news release.
A temporary asphalt will be put down on the road and then final paving is scheduled for 2019. Access for local residents will be maintained but the road will be closed to through traffic.
Funding for this project is provided by local option sales tax for transportation, which was adopted by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners in 2014. Riley Brothers Construction of Morris is the contractor.
"We appreciate everyone's patience during construction," said Robley. "The newly constructed roadway will be a significant improvement for motorists."
