Douglas County schools named Minnesota Reading Corps sites

Minnesota Reading Corps, a statewide, research-based initiative to help every Minnesota child become a successful reader by the end of third grade, has selected four Douglas County elementary schools to be sites for their program.

Voyager Elementary, Brandon Elementary, Evansville Elementary and Miltona Science Magnet have been selected and will be recruiting paid literacy tutors for the 2014-2015 school year.

The program places trained AmeriCorps tutors in selected sites to work with children at risk for not reading at grade level from age 3 to third grade. The tutors provide individualized research-based interventions directly with the students. There are approximately 700 sites that are selected throughout the state.

According to 2013 state standardized tests, one in three Minnesota third graders does not read at grade level.

Minnesota Reading Corps and Math Corps Executive Director Sheila Piippo explained that Minnesota Reading Corps help assist struggling students who need additional support.

“We are seeing real results,” Piippo said. “Children who previously were not on track to succeed are now catching up to their peers.”

The paid tutors are trained not only to boost children’s literacy skills, but to help close the achievement gap.
