Get free red pine seedling at Minnesota State Fair
Minnesota Forest Industries (MFI), has been a Minnesota State Fair favorite for 22 years by giving away free seedlings at its booth in the Education Building. And this year, MFI is showing students and teachers how to learn more about trees.
Visitors to MFI's booth this year will see TreezyDoesIt.com, a website that not only features a Tree Identification app for SmartBoards, but also helps teachers incorporate tree ID lessons in their curriculum. The site also includes videos on jobs in Minnesota's forest products industry.
And, of course, fairgoers will also be able to pick up one of the 15,000 Red Pine seedlings that will be given away during the Great Minnesota Get Together, Aug. 22 - Sept. 2.
"Healthy forests are a way of life in our state," said Wayne Brandt, MFI's executive vice president. "It's important that our students learn about trees and the forest in the classroom: what trees we have, how they grow, and how they contribute to the Minnesota lifestyle and to our economy. TreezyDoesIt.com makes it easy for teachers to include these lessons."
More than 30,000 Minnesotans work in the forest products industry, generating nearly $9 billion to the state's economy. And, the state's forests are certified healthy and sustainable by two independent, third party organizations.
"Minnesota has more trees than it had 50 years ago," Brandt said, "and more large trees, too. That's due to the dedication of the hardworking people who go to great lengths to properly manage this valuable renewable resource."
Minnesota Forest Industries is an association representing these state forest products companies: Bell Timber; Boise, Inc; Hedstrom Lumber Company; Louisiana Pacific; Minnesota Power; Molpus Woodlands Group; Norbord Minnesota; Potlatch Land and Timber; Sappi Fine Paper North America; and UPM, Blandin Paper Mill. MFI members encourage conservation, proper forest management and industry development that foster sound environmental stewardship, multiple use of timber lands and sustainable, long-term timber supply. MFI's web address is minnesotaforests.com.
