Resorters Golf Tournament: Senior Division, Thursday

The field of four is set with some Resorters regulars still in the hunt for the Senior Division title this year.

Defending champion Steve Herzog of Alexandria punched his ticket to the semifinals be-hind a commanding start on the front nine in a 6-5 win over Gary Rolfzen of St. Cloud.

Bob Falls of Edina will try to dethrone Herzog as he won the right to face him with a 5-4 win on Thursday. Joining them will be Steve Gergen of Mendota Heights and Becker's Greg Mattson, who both persevered in tighter matches to secure their spots in the semis.

The seniors will tee off from No. 1 at 12:24 this afternoon to see who will earn the right to play for a championship on Saturday. Here is a closer look at how they all reached this point.

Herzog was steady enough on the front nine to take advantage of a slow start from Rolfzen as he built a 4-up lead by the turn and never looked back.

The four-time Resorters champion got going with a bogey win at No. 4. That was the first of four straight wins for him. Herzog parred the next three holes to take a commanding lead and added another par win on No. 9 after Rolfzen took his only hole of the match with a par on No. 8.

Herzog only got better once they reached the back. He birdied No. 10 before both players parred 11. That was the prelude to a birdie win on No. 12 for Herzog before they both parred the 13th to end things early with Herzog a 6-5 winner.

Falls earned the right to play Herzog by posting an impressive round of his own in a 5-4 win over Byron Zinn of Spice-wood, Texas.

Falls never trailed in this one as he shot a 39 on the front and grabbed a 2-up lead. He got par wins on Nos. 3 and 7, but the two halved every other hole on the front.

Falls then used a stretch of three straight wins to open things up. He took No. 11 with a par before his only birdie of the day put him 4-up after 12. Falls then carded a par on No. 13 before both bogeyed 14 to give him the 5-4 win.

Things were a little closer on the lower side of the bracket as Gergen took a 3-2 win over Jim Arnold of Plymouth by birdying the par-4 16th.

That ended a match that was fairly close from start to finish. Arnold jumped out early with a par win on 1 before Gergen grabbed two straight wins on Nos. 3 and 4 with pars. That started a back-and-forth be-tween the two as Arnold answered with a par win on 5 and Gergen returned the favor with par wins on 6 and 7.

Gergen never trailed again after that. He took that two-hole lead onto the back, where he immediately added to it with a birdie win on 10. Two holes later, it was another birdie that made it a four-hole lead.

Arnold still had a run in him. He battled back with two straight wins, which included a birdie on the par-5 14th. That is as close as he could get, though, as both players parred 15 before Gergen went out in style with the birdie win on 16.

Alexandria's Bill Freeman had an early birdie win on No. 2 that gave him a lead, but it didn't last as Becker's Greg Mattson outlasted him for a 2-1 win to punch the final ticket to the semifinals.

The two players were even after six before Freeman took his final lead of the day with a bogey win on 7. It didn't last long as Mattson came back from a double-bogey to card a birdie win on 8.

Mattson had just one bogey the rest of the way. He earned a par win at Nos. 10 and 13 before Freeman added a birdie win at 14. He couldn't get any closer than that as Mattson's par win at 16 helped him end things a little early after both players parred the 17th.
