Resorters Golf Tournament: Senior Men's Division, Wednesday

Here's an update of the Senior Men's Division Championship in the Resorters Golf Tournament being played at the Alexandria Golf Course after play concluded Wednesday.

Steve Herzog started his hunt for another Senior Division Championship yesterday with a win in the opening round of match play.

One major shakeup happened in the field when second-seeded Mike Hartmann was knocked out of the field by Steve Gergen.

The excitement of the day came after Jim Arnold knocked Robert Chesley off the championship flight in a 19-hole match.

Play will continue today with the first group teeing off on No. 1 at 12:18 p.m. The second group will follow on No. 1 at 12:27 p.m.

Herzog defeated Pete Passolt. Match details were not available.

St. Cloud resident Gary Rolfzen built an immediate 2-up lead that he used to card a victory against Hood River, Oregon native Steve Tessmer.

Rolfzen used a bogey on No. 1 and a par on No. 2 to build a 2-up lead he would never relinquish. Back-and-forth play put Rolfzen in the lead at 2-up after play concluded on the front nine.

A birdie on No. 10 for Rolfzen helped elevate his lead to 3-up. Tessmer tried to cut into the lead, but was unable to after the two golfers won every other hole on Nos. 11 through 15. Rolfzen finally won the match with a birdie on No. 16.

Edina resident Bob Falls overcame a deficit after nine holes to take the match against Al Strassburg of Clear Lake.

A back-and-forth battle put Strassburg 1-up after the first nine holes of the match were completed. Strassburg took wins on Nos. 2, 7 and 8, while Falls claimed Nos. 4 and 6.

Two straight wins with a birdie and a par on Nos. 10 and 11 built a 1-up lead for Falls, and he added to the lead with a par on No. 14. Strassburg cut into the lead with a par on No. 15, but a bogey on No. 17 gave Falls a 2-up lead and the match.

DUBE', 7-6

Byron Zinn from Spicewood, Texas needed just 12 holes to roll his way to a steady 7-6 victory against Robert Dube' of Hastings.

After the two tied on their first hole, Zinn shot two bogeys and three pars to win five consecutive holes. Zinn finished 6-up against Dube' after concluding play on the front nine, thanks in part to pars on Nos. 8 and 9.

The pair tied Nos. 10 and 11, and a par for Zinn on No. 12 finished the match.

Gergen, a Mendota Heights Native, never trailed in his opening round win against Hartmann.

Momentum in the match started to build after Gergen built a 2-up lead with pars on Nos. 1-3. A birdie on No. 6 along with a couple of pars helped Gergen open a 5-up lead after play concluded on the front nine.

Pars on Nos. 10 and 11 helped Gergen build a 7-up lead before Hartman took one back on No. 12 with a par.

Bogeys on No. 13 for both golfers finished off Gergen's victory in the match.

It took 19 holes, but Plymouth resident Jim Arnold overcame an early deficit to win against Robert Chesley of Mankato.

Chesley led 1-up after play concluded on the first nine holes, building his lead with a par on No. 2 and a bogey on No. 4. Arnold's only win in the first nine came with a birdie on No. 8.

Momentum turned to Arnold's favor in the match as he won four of the first five holes of the back nine. The 2-up lead happened in part to birdies on Nos. 10 and 14.

Chesley tied the match thanks to a par on No. 15 and a birdie on No. 17.

With the match tied after play was completed, Chesley won the 19th hole to advance to the second round of match play in the Senior Division.

Nine consecutive holes of bogey free golf helped Becker resident Greg Mattson hold an early lead he built against Norty Blanchard of Burnsville.

Mattson built a two stroke lead early in the match thanks to two consecutive pars on Nos. 2 and 3. Blanchard cut into the early lead with a birdie on No. 5.

Mattson closed out the front nine with a par to rebuild his lead to 2-up.

A birdie on No. 11 for Blanchard cut the lead to 1-up, but Mattson took it back when he birdied himself on No. 12.

Mattson built his lead to 3-up after a par on No. 14, and the golfers tied the next two holes to end the match.

Alexandria native Bill Free-man only needed 12 holes to knock off fellow Alexandria native Randy Johnson, 7-6.

Freeman shot a 38 with seven pars to give himself a 5-up lead after play was completed on the front nine.

The roll continued on the back nine for Freeman, as two pars and a birdie helped give him the victory in the first round of play.
