Resorters Golf Tournament: Junior 13-15 Division, Wednesday

Here's an update of the Junior 13-15 Division Championship in the Resorters Golf Tournament being played at the Alexandria Golf Course after play concluded Wednesday.

After playing only two matches this week, one golfer in the Junior 13-15 Division already has a wide open door to the championship match on Saturday.

Brett Buckingham won 3-2 against his opponent Gage Grimes in second-round match play yesterday, but a scheduling conflict forced him to concede his next match.

This means that Ryan Swedberg, a native of Monterey, California, who also won yesterday, will play for the Junior 13-15 Division title.

Top seeded Andrew Lindberg, of Coppell, Texas moved on to the semifinal match today, as did Samuel Franklin of Maple Grove.

Franklin and Lindberg will tee off at noon on Friday from the first tee for the chance to face Swedberg in the division title.

Top seeded Lindberg never trailed in his match against Lincoln Johnson as he cruised to a 4-2 victory.

Three pars on the first three holes gave Lindberg an early two-stroke lead, but he followed that with a double bogey and a bogey to erase his lead.

Lindberg bounced back by shooting pars on the next seven holes to take a 2-up lead.

After both players bogeyed No. 4, Lindberg used three-straight pars to finish the match. Johnson kept pace with a par on No. 5, but a bogey and a double-bogey on Nos. 6 and 7 left the door open for Lindberg.

Zosel, 5-4

Franklin made quick work of his opponent Jacob Zosel, winning the quarterfinal match in just 14 holes.

Zosel's only victory came with a par on No. 1, giving him an early lead.

Franklin rebounded, shooting a par on the next hole to tie the match. After ties on the next four holes, Franklin shot three straight pars to take a 2-up lead heading into the front nine.

Both players bogeyed No. 1, but pars on the next two holes put Franklin 4-up in the match.

Franklin bogeyed No. 4, but took a commanding 5-up lead anyway when Zosel shot a dou-ble-bogey. Pars for both players on No. 5 iced the match for Franklin.

Glenwood native Bucking-ham used four straight wins on the front-nine to erase his deficit and seal the match against Alexandria native Grimes, 3-2.

After the two golfers traded leads through the first seven holes, Grimes birdied No. 17 to gain a 1-up lead on Bucking-ham. The birdie was Grimes' second of the day, with another coming on No. 12.

After tying the next three holes, Buckingham turned the entire match around by winning the next four holes with pars. Grimes shot bogeys on each of the four holes, and his lead quickly fell to a victory on No. 6 for Buckingham.

The contest would be Buckingham's last, as he conceded his next match to Swedberg.

SIGEL, 4-3

A solid front-nine performance that included two birdies carried Swedberg to a 4-3 victory against Ben Sigel.

Sigel won the first two holes of the match to take an early 2-up lead. Swedberg battled back, taking the next two holes to tie the match. Five straight pars for both golfers kept the match tied heading into the front-nine.

Swedberg made his move in the match beginning on No. 1. He birdied the hole to go 1-up, and then followed that with back-to-back pars to take a 2-up lead.

After both players bogeyed No. 4, Swedberg shot a par and a birdie that Sigel could not match. Now 4-up, Swedberg shot a birdie on No. 6 to finish the match.

Swedberg will now wait to see who he will face in the championship match. He will take on either Lindberg or Franklin for the Junior 13-15 title on Saturday.
