Four people gained mobility because volunteers for Douglas County Car Care Program (DCCCP) repaired their vehicles on the first Car Care last Saturday at Koep's Korner in Alexandria.

With the support of Harold Koep and technician Tom Carlson, the volunteers were able to replace two brake lines, a rear view mirror, an oxygen sensor, a sway bar link, rear wheel bearing, an EGR valve, repair the inner driver's door panel, clean a mass air flow sensor and replace two tires.

The parts were purchased by DCCCP at greatly reduced prices from NAPA and Auto Value in Alexandria.

To help get the Car Care Saturday program going, two volunteers drove up from the Twin Cities to volunteer with the repair of the four cars. Helping local volunteer and DCCCP board member Jerry Wright were Mike Schultz, the senior quality and continuation engineer for Smiths-Medical ASD of St. Paul, and Dan Schmidtke, the principal urgent response manager for Lawson Software Products in Minneapolis.

Volunteers are needed to make the program work. If you are not sure, come to the next Car Care Saturday on June 15 at 8 a.m. at Koep's Korner in Alexandria. Typically, the work will be completed by noon.

If you want to volunteer, a reminder will be sent out after your first time if you want to continue and you are under no obligation to be present for any future Car Care Saturday.

Any time and talent you can share will be appreciated, said DCCCP members. Being a certified technician is not necessary. Sometimes just being a helping hand will make the job go faster and easier, they said.

Volunteers enjoy the chance to work together with others and help people in need.
