Field day to demonstrate cover crops

A cover crop demonstration field day will be held on Wednesday, October 24 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on farms in the Glenwood and Sunburg areas.

The tour will start at the Dan Jenniges farm at 22887 County Road 10 in Glenwood. Jenniges will discuss his attempt to seed a cover crop into standing corn to provide fall forage for his beef herd as well as some of the challenges he encountered during this drought year.

After that, the tour will proceed to the Jess Berge farm at 480 170th Avenue Northeast in Sunburg. Berge will talk about his success with planting and grazing a cover crop mix of turnips and rape following forage peas and oats that he bagged for silage.

During the tour, Tom Champa, a soil scientist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, will demonstrate techniques that can be used to monitor the effects of different management systems on soil health, including those systems that incorporate cover crops and livestock.

This tour is sponsored by the Chippewa 10% Project, which helps family farmers find profitable ways to add diversity to their farms and secure their long-term viability for the next generation. This is a joint initiative of the Land Stewardship Project and the Chippewa River Watershed Project.

The field day is free, but pre-registration is requested. To register or for more information, contact Julia Ahlers Ness at (320) 269-2105 or
