Vikingland Band Festival is Sunday

If you love a parade - and who doesn't - Alexandria is the place to be this Sunday, June 24.

The 28th annual Vikingland Band Festival's Parade Marching Championship will head down Broadway starting at 1:30 p.m.

The annual event features some of the Midwest's finest high school marching bands, which gather in Alexandria to compete in this prestigious marching championship.

The 2,000 marching band participants are joined by approximately 20,000 spectators who line Broadway to witness the best in action.

Last year's winner in Class A was Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, while Sauk Rapids-Rice won the Class AA title. Park Center grabbed the Class AAA crown and the 728 Cadets of Elk River/Rogers reigned as the Class AAAA champions.

Bemidji won the People's Choice award with Park Center receiving the Grand Champion trophy.

Since the Festival's beginning, 84 different bands have competed in the presigious event. Seven different bands have claimed the Grand Champion title.

Although the event kicks off at 1:30 p.m., organizers urge spectators to arrive early to ensure getting a good seat.
