Residents invited to join celebration of Thrivent's impact

The city of Alexandria has proclaimed Thursday, May 31, 2012, as Thrivent Financial Day in Alexandria.

The recognition honors the impact the not-for-profit organization has made in the local community through charitable giving and volunteerism.

In its proclamation, the city urges citizens to be cognizant of the importance of local partnerships with nonprofit organizations and to recognize the vital role Thrivent Financial has in Alexandria.

Since 2007, Thrivent Financial has contributed $1,683,235 to the Alexandria area. Recipients include individuals and families in need, nonprofits, schools, corporations and congregations. Additionally, Thrivent Financial has contributed more than 92,339 volunteer hours to countless organizations to help strengthen the Alexandria area.

Local residents are encouraged to see how Thrivent Financial helping two local nonprofits social ministry organizations thrive: Douglas County Habitat for Humanity and Knute Nelson.

Thrivent Financial has contributed $700,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County in support of building eight homes for families in need of safe, decent and affordable housing and $100,000 to Knute Nelson in assisting with the development of Grand Arbor.

To celebrate, two dedications are scheduled for Thursday, May 31:

• 1:30 p.m. - Grand Arbor Healing Gardens, 4403 Pioneer Road SE, Alexandria.

• 4 p.m. - Thrivent Builds Habitat Home, 820 Thomas Drive NE, Alexandria, Eric Magnuson family.

The public is invited to attend both dedication ceremonies.

The role of social ministry organizations is to meet human needs, advocate for dignity and justice and work for peace and reconciliation among all people, according to Thrivent leaders. The social ministry organizations commit themselves to faithful stewardship of their resources and to continuous growth in knowledge, effectiveness and generosity of response realizing their shared Christian mission, ministry partnerships and faithful stewardship.
