Deck collapse injures 16 people

The deck that collapsed at 1404 East Lake Geneva Road in Alexandria was located on the lake side of the home. At least 20 emergency response vehicles lined the street out front. Dozens of neighbors looked on as firefighters, paramedics and law enforcement loaded injured people into several ambulances.

A deck collapse sent 16 people to Douglas County Hospital Friday night.

Just after 8 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff's Office received several 911 calls reporting that a deck collapsed at 1404 East Lake Geneva Road Northeast in Alexandria.

Callers told dispatchers there were 20 to 25 people on the deck when it fell 10 to 12 feet to the ground.

Several ambulance services were called in to the scene to transport the injured.

Responding agencies included: North Ambulance, Parkers Prairie Ambulance, Glacial Ridge Ambulance, Alexandria Fire Department, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Alexandria Police Department, Carlos Police Department and Minnesota State Patrol.

The home is owned by Barbara Jane Thompson.

On Saturday, Thompson told the Echo Press that two of the 16 people injured were held overnight in the hospital. The others were treated and released with mostly bumps, bruises and scrapes, she said.
