Cardinal junior Jamie Piepenburg traded one state championship for another, and senior Rosey Erickson successfully defended her long jump crown as the Alexandria girls finished second at the State Class AA track and field meet over the weekend at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Piepenburg, the defending champion in the 1,600-meter run, had to settle for second place in that event as Christina Monson of Albert Lea edged her out of the top spot in the final 50 meters. Just 0.21 seconds separated the two as Monson finished in 4:59.29 and Piepenburg in 4:59.51. Both times were shy of Piepenburg's winning time from last year of 4:58.23.

The Redbird junior captured her first title in the 3,200-meter run on Friday as she clocked in at 10:42.45, knocking defending champ Maria Hauger of Shakopee into second place. Hauger finished 2.45 seconds behind Piepenburg. Neither runner was close to Hauger's winning time of 10:41.87 from 2010.

Erickson was five inches shy of her winning distance from last year of 18' 7.25", and was 3.75"_better than second place finisher Nadia Lorencz of Farmington.

She added a fourth place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 36' 8.5" and a fourth in the 200-meter dash in 25.61. She rounded out her final state tournament with a sixth place in the 100-meter dash in 12.66.

Karly Betterman, a Cardinal freshman, finished 12th in the preliminaries of the 300 low hurdles with a time of 47.63 and did not qualify for the finals. Brittany Ludwig, a junior, was 14th in the preliminaries of the discus with a toss of 103' 2" and also did not qualify for the finals.
