Pipeline Travel Plaza in Alexandria sells winning ticket worth $200,000
His job as an independent truck driver brings Doug Abel to Minnesota several days a week from his home in Portage, Wisconsin. As he was driving through Alexandria on October 21, he stopped at Pipeline Travel Plaza, 3181 Evergreen Lane SW in Alexandria for some coffee.
When he paid for the coffee, Abel decided to purchase four $200,000 Monopoly scratch tickets.
Those tickets did not produce any winnings, so he decided to purchase one more. "I scratched it right there in the store," Abel said. "When I scratched it off I looked at the lady," he recalled. "She said, 'What? Don't tell me you have another loser.' I said, 'I just won $200,000!' "
Abel immediately called his wife, Sue. He said, "It's a really good day today!"
Sue Abel said, "It took him about 20 minutes to convince me. When I said, you are serious? He said, yes, I'm still shaking!"
The couple drove to Lottery headquarters in Roseville on October 29 to claim the $200,000 prize.
