Alexandria Blizzard hockey players to compete in Blaine tournament this week

The eighth annual North American Hockey League (NAHL) Showcase Tournament returns to the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, this week, and with it comes more than 100 hockey players from the state of Minnesota - including Alexandria.

From September 15-18, a total of 118 Minnesotans will take to the ice to open the 2010-11 NAHL season in front of scores of college and professional scouts, family members and fans.

The 118 Minnesota natives represent 62 communities from around the state - from Warroad in the north to Rochester in the south and from Stillwater in the east to Alexandria in the west.

Sixteen of the NAHL's 26 teams feature at least one Minnesota native, led by the Coulee Region Chill with 19, and the Alexandria Blizzard and Owatonna Express with 14 each.

The NAHL Showcase is now widely considered one of the most well-attended and heavily-scouted festivals in all of North America. Each of the league's 26 teams will play four regular-season games during the event.

Traditionally, the NAHL Showcase Tournament attracts over 5,000 people in overall attendance, including more than 200 college and professional scouts. With the additions of the North American Prospects Hockey League and the NAHL Future Prospects Tournament events in recent years, that total is expected to exceed 9,000 this year.

Daily tickets are $8 for students/seniors and $15 for adults. Tournament passes are $20 for students/seniors and $50 for adults. Children 6 and under are free.
