Community Night Out to take place August 3

The community is invited to the annual "Community Night Out" celebration.

On Tuesday, August 3, the Alexandria Police Department and the city of Alexandria will join forces with thousands of other communities nationwide in a celebration against crime and drugs for the 27th annual National Night Out.

Locally, the Alexandria Police Department will host the annual event, "Growing Stronger by Building Strong Community Partnerships," from 5 to 7 p.m. at Alexandria's City Park.

This year's focus is on the city of Alexandria and its community, according to organizers.

There are special events planned and organized for this community crime prevention effort that authorities hope sends a strong message to children and the rest of the community.

It is the goal of the event to show the community what the city of Alexandria has to offer its citizens.

The police department, along with the Alexandria Street Department, Parks Department, fire department, municipal liquor stores, Runestone Community Center, Alexandria Light and Power, CenterPoint Energy, North Ambulance, Douglas County Safe Communities Coalition and Alexandria's Cultural Inclusiveness Committee will combine efforts and represent the many different facets within the city to show a unified effort that organizers hope will bring the community closer together.

The event will showcase other partnerships with local organizations and businesses that helped with the event.

The Eagles Lodge is sponsoring free hot dogs, Viking Bottling Company is sponsoring free beverages, Culvers Restaurant is sponsoring free frozen custard and Pete's County Market is sponsoring free hot dog buns.

Other contributors to the event include Target, Walmart, Henry's Foods and Paul's Small Engine.

There will be Taser demonstrations, night vision goggle demonstrations and fatal vision goggle demonstrations.

Also, police officers, bike patrol and SWAT team members will be on hand.

The Alexandria Fire Department will have fire trucks on hand to look at and will also have the "Fire Hopper," an inflatable children's bouncer.

Alexandria Light and Power will be giving boom truck rides and both the street and parks departments will have large equipment on site as well.
