An 87-year-old Alexandria man died from injuries he suffered in a bicycle-pickup crash north of Alexandria Saturday.

Don R. Keith was bicycling south on Highway 29 near Birch Avenue when he collided with a 1997 Ford pickup driven by Nick R. Jalbert, 26, of Alexandria, which was also traveling south.

The crash happened at about 2:20 p.m.

Keith was transported by North Ambulance to the Douglas County Hospital but he died later that night.

Keith is the husband of Phyllis Keith of Alexandria and the father of Shelly Nelson of Alexandria.

The Keiths moved here about eight years ago. The Echo Press highlighted Don Keith's passion for bicycling in past stories. Even when he was in his 80s, he kept physically active by riding his bike three to four times a week on jaunts that covered 30 to 40 miles, the newspaper reported in 2005.

A memorial service will be held today, Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the chapel on Wednesday.
