Help paint the town purple next week

To help promote the Relay For Life of Douglas County, organizers are urging local businesses to "Paint the Town Purple" next week.

A kickoff for the event is set for Monday, July 5. Volunteers are meeting near the Big Ole statue at 6 p.m. and will help tie purple ribbons on lampposts in downtown Alexandria.

Also starting on Monday, July 5, a contest will take place for the best decorated business window.

Traveling trophies will be awarded for the decorating contest - one for a business with a relay team and one for any other business that currently does not have a team.

Judging will take place between July 6 and July 9.

Winners will be announced at the opening ceremony of the Relay For Life at Jefferson High School's Citizens Field at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 9 and trophies will be awarded at that time.

In order to participate in the decorating contest, businesses must have a Relay For Life poster displayed in the business or the business window.

To receive a poster and confirm your participation, contact Jeanette Weber at (320) 808-8849 or e-mail in order to ensure that the judges visit your business.

Purple ribbon lapel pins will be given to teams/businesses who participate.

Even those that don't want to participate in the decorating contest may still join the Paint the Town Purple effort by decorating their business in purple. If you don't have a window to decorate, you can be creative and tie in anything purple within your business, such as having a day to dress in purple, interior/exterior purple decorations, balloons, flowers, decorating your sidewalk with purple chalk art.

"Just think purple!" organizers said.
